Harold Codrington graduated with a B.Sc. (Economics) from the University of the West Indies in 1977 and went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Economics from York University, Toronto, Canada in 1979.
Mr. Codrington worked as an Economist in the Ministry of Finance and Planning from 1977 to 1978 before joining the staff of the Central Bank of Barbados in 1979 as an Economist in the Research Department. He served as Senior Economist and Deputy Director (Economics) in that Department and was appointed Adviser to the Governor in 1995. Effective March 1, 2011 he was appointed Deputy Governor of the Bank, a position he held until his retirement in November 2016.
In 1986 Mr. Codrington was attached to the Balance of Payments Division, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Washington D.C. From 1989 to 1990, he was seconded to the International Monetary Fund as Technical Assistant to the Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the English-speaking Caribbean. During the summer of 1993, he was a Fulbright Scholar at George Washington University in Washington D.C.
Mr. Codrington has published papers on the Balance of Payments, Public Transport, Taxation, Monetary Union and Economic Development. He was the Editor of the Newsletter of the Barbados Economics Society from 1998 to 2012. His book – Both Sides of the Coin: The Story of the Central Bank of Barbados, 1972-2017 – was published in 2019.
From 2010 to 2016 Mr. Codrington represented the Central Bank of Barbados on the Board of CARICRIS, the Caribbean credit rating agency, which is located in Trinidad and Tobago. He was also Chairman of the Cultural Industries Development Authority (2017-2018), Deputy Chairman of the Transport Authority (2013-2018) and a member of the Board of Resolution Life Assurance Company (2016-2019). He is (since 2018) a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Commission.
